Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla (ร้านเฮียหวานข้าวต้มปลา) is an excellent restaurant in Bangkok that specializes in serving khao to pla, which is rice soup with fish. As opposed to congee, which is more like a porridge, khao tom is a rice that’s fully cooked, but then boiled in soup, so the grains of rice remain in tact instead of getting stick like in congee. To begin our meal at Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla (ร้านเฮียหวานข้าวต้มปลา)I had the Khao tom pla gao (ข้าวต้มปลาเก๋า), Thai rice soup with brown marbled grouper. The thing I immediately noticed is that the fish was very fresh – it had no fishy taste, and the fish was firm and had a wonderful flavor. Additionally, the sauce was also very good, made with fermented soy beans.

Next we tried their goong ob woon sen (กุ้งอบวุ้นเส้น), mung bean noodles cooked with shrimp in a little personal pan. It’s not the best version that I’ve had in Bangkok, but it was still pretty good – and the shrimp were giant in size, which made the dish even better. The shrimp dipped in the Thai seafood sauce was fantastic. We also tried their tom yum pla kapong (ต้มยำปลากะพง), tom yum soup made with fresh pieces of barramundi. Just like the rice soup, the tom yum was very fresh and the pieces of fish were firm and delicious. But the actual soup was a little on the sweet side for me – still good and I especially just liked the big pieces of fish.

Finally, the best dish for me, along with the khao tom, was the Luak jim ruam mit (ลวดจิ้มรวมมิตร), a dish of a variety of seafood just boiled and topped with a handful of crispy garlic and Chinese celery. It’s a plain dish, and then you just take the seafood and dip it into the Thai seafood sauce for flavor. The dish was excellent, all the seafood was extremely fresh.

Everything that Hia Wan Khao Tom Pla (ร้านเฮียหวานข้าวต้มปลา) serves is on the plain side, and so the freshness of the seafood really can’t be covered up by anything. So you can be assured that they serve fresh seafood, and they do a good job at serving what they do. I really liked all the fish, and the seafood sauce to go with is.
