Falling From The Sky | FULL EPISODE | Mayday: Air Disaster

Spread The Viralist

June 24, 1982 – On a clear summer night, during a seemingly calm trip to Australia, the impossible happens to British Airways Flight 009. Smoke starts filling the cabin. The engines catch fire – then stop working. The flight crew witness a bizarre shower of brilliant sparks strike the windshield of the aircraft. The entire plane is surrounded by a shimmering white glow.

Without power, the plane begins falling from the sky. Passengers are terrified. The crew have no idea why their engines have quit – or how to get them working again. As they fall through the night the captain faces a difficult choice – return to the nearest airport and likely crash into the mountains, or attempt an incredibly difficult ocean landing.

Just minutes before crashing into the sea, the stricken plane’s engines roar back to life. The jet limps back to Halim airport in Jakarta. But the crew realises that their windshield is severely damaged — making it nearly impossible to see their runway. After suffering through a night of bizarre twists and turns, they manage to touch down safely at Halim. But they are still bewildered – what had knocked their plane from the sky? What investigators discover changed the way pilots are trained and altered the understanding of how volcanoes can affect aviation.

  1. Wow this freaked me out. At first I thought they went through the Bermuda Triangle. Glad everyone serviced. Seriously ! Kudos to the pilots for never giving up! Always fight till the bitter end ?

  2. The fact that you could smoke on a plane back in the day just seems insane… It's like begging for a fire inside the cabin…. That just seems so crazy now days.

  3. The thing I HATE about all shows like this (made for tv documentaries) is that after every commercial break they rehash the last 15 minutes or so of the program in case someone just "tuned in" or you just have a terrible memory and forgot everything while watching that McDonald's commercial.

  4. These men are heroes in the mist. I don't know how they are able to keep level heads. But thanks to their diligence, people's lives were saved. I tip my hat to these incredible pilots and flight crew.

  5. When you don’t know what’s wrong with the plane how do u diagnose this? I would be so worried to be the next one to travel in the same plane

  6. First of all let me say it's excellent job applying got the bird on the ground in one piece and lost no souls. Although given your position and flight path and did not know the eruption coincided with your flight I did guess volcanic ash and some bizarre interaction with your cabin lights completely forgot about Saint Elmo's Fire again nice landing

  7. This just shows me the incompetence of the Indonesian Government and Airport. No air warning of a volcanic eruption to flights, unworking glide equipment, clueless ATC that couldn’t understand them. Saved only by the skill of the pilots and reliability of those Rolls Royce engines. The government was completely clueless of the air conditions and a volcano even erupted. Between Indonesia and Malaysian air traffic incompetence, why would any plane make it out alive is a miracle

  8. The scariest thing is how a large volcanic eruption, asteroid, nuke, etc; could put huge amounts of dust into the atmosphere for months or years and ground all aircraft on top of the general nuclear winter hellscape it causes
