? WATCH – Giant Fried Garlic Shrimp –

KHON KAEN (ขอนแก่น) – Welcome to Khon Kaen (ขอนแก่น) province in the Isaan (northeastern region) of Thailand, and more specifically Khao Suan Kwang district – famous for their unique style of grilled chicken! In this video you have a chance to see their secret recipe and reason why this Thai street food grilled chicken is so incredibly tasty! #streetfood #ThaiFood #KhonKaen

First of all, you arrive to the town, and it’s literally a massive highway, with about 50 different grilled chicken restaurants and street food stalls to choose from, all displaying the unique grilled chicken of this district.

Oom Im Restaurant (อุ๋มอิ๋ม ไก่ย่างเขาสวนกวาง – We chose to go to Oom Im Restaurant (อุ๋มอิ๋ม ไก่ย่างเขาสวนกวาง) and I’m glad I chose them over any other options – they are family run, laid back, and so friendly. They even went the extra effort to show us all the ingredients that go into the marinade of Khao Suan Kwang Grilled Chicken (ไก่ย่างเขาสวนกวาง). There are two main reasons why this type of grilled chicken is so good – one is because of the chickens themselves – the chicken breed. Two is because of both the marinade and mainly because the grilling technique. A big part of this type of street food chicken is the way that it’s wrapped on a bamboo skewer and grilled of the basin bbq grill style!

I think I emphasized this three times in the video – but you’ll see the chickens on the grill and they look scrawny and dried up, but you’ll be so surprised how moist and juicy the chicken is. The flavor, the texture, the creaminess, and the crispy skin, is on all another level.

  1. I get a headache from the names of these cities and the language spoken. How on earth can people visit these places if even they want to do so-:))

  2. I watched so many Mark Wiens Videos am not able to time the "Wauw"´s perfectly with him.
Somehow I feel proud about it and am thinking now if i should list it in my CV under special abilities 😀

  3. Another great vid. Note that the he did not show the whole gai yang marinade process which involves a thick coriander root/garlic/white pepper/ ginger paste after the soy sauce bath. None of those ingredients were in that bath!

  4. Grilled chicken at Khao Suan Kwang "Khon Kaen" is the best for me, the tasty is very good and the fragrance from garlic is so good!!!!
So pity that you didn't go to Udonthani province (Near Khon Kaen)also , it is my hometown lol…and have a good food for breakfast waiting you to taste it!.

  5. 18:05 Oh wow, that flavor. That moistness is insane. .. and that crispy skin, and that salty marinade. The pepper – white pepper, the ginger you taste the hint of ginger, you taste the earthiness of that coriander roots. — all of those factors combined. That skin is insane

    Oh wow yes,
23:38 (look at his face) You are gonna eat the whole chicken yourself, maybe two

  6. ha ha haaaaaa, Mark. Oh Mark, Mark, Mark!! You're something else. First you TAUNT everyone by holding up the BBQd skinny chicken drumstick and thighs — right in front of the camera, THEn at 17:50 after you tasted it, boy that Skinny_Chickn_gasm look on your face had me rolling. Oh Mark, what a great dude you are!! You're fun to watch. Kudos chap!

  7. Hey Mark. I have a
Small request I hope u at least can take as a consideration? Can you please go back to not making sounds when u eat. I’ve sadly stopped watching for a while now because of that and I love and have been a true follower since forever. The “uhm,” the “wow” and so forth is fine?. That’s all u? hehe, but the smacking of the tung/lips when chewing is not so nice and makes one come of the food/experience ur having (like misbehave children or asamr) . Please, I miss watching ur videos. I’ll try to post this on ur newest uploaded videos in the hope of u maybe getting a chance to read it as not many youtubers read comments at all or only in the beginning of an upload.
    Best regards, S. From Denmark
