Number 10. Dog Falls Through Ice

When a dog fell through the ice covering a pond during a Louisville, Kentucky winter, her owners had to think fast in order to save her. The dog can be seen struggling to get a good purchase on the slippery ice, but just can’t seem to get a good enough grip to pull itself out. Freezing water will quickly sap the energy of anything that falls into it and the dog is clearly exhausted and freaking out. A guy manages to get to the pooch in a kayak with a safety line strapped to the back. As he approaches the dog it doesn’t seem to notice him at all, being totally focused on trying to escape its frigid predicament. Once the kayaker gets closer, however, the dog finally takes notice and is able to be coaxed onto the front of the kayak. The kayaker holds the dog in place from that point onward and rescue crews pull them both to safety thanks to the line attached to the kayak. It seems that the dog’s owners had already tried to save their furry friend, who goes by the name Lady, but they also ended up falling through the ice during the attempt. Thankfully, they were also rescued and dragged to shore by emergency responders whose quick-thinking averted almost certain disaster.

Number 9. Storm Drain Trouble

A family pet in Rockland County, New York, was rescued after the community banded together to save its life. The dog could have easily been killed when she wandered off and found herself in trouble. The dog was 16 years old at the time and both her eyesight and hearing weren’t all that great, which is probably why she accidentally got caught in a storm pipe. The dog had climbed a good 50 feet into the pipe, hampering rescue efforts and turning what should have been a small job into a massive spectacle. Firefighters were able to free the family pet by digging a hole close to the spot where they thought she was located, cutting through the storm drain pipe to reach her. Their job wasn’t over yet, as they still had to rig a makeshift sled to help loose the dog from the pipe. The entire operation took over four hours to complete and firefighters had to spend a good amount of that time underground, trying desperately to free the unlucky dog. The moment when she was finally pulled out of the drain was a very happy one and it’s a good thing that they were able to save her life.

Number 8. Wildfire Threatens Cape Grysbokkie

When wildfires tore through the mountains around Bettie’s Bay in South Africa, emergency responders were all called to the scene in order to help stop the blaze and save animals that were trapped by the flames. One injured animal that ended up being rescued was a young Cape Grysbokkie deer. They found the animal covered in burns and other injuries. It was so badly burned that it was suffering from extreme hypothermia, unable to maintain its body temperature. Its hooves, face, and ears were especially burned and it was initially unclear whether or not human intervention would be enough to save its life. Paramedics helped out by giving the cute little creature oral fluids, also using warm water bottles to help keep it from freezing to death or suffering further complications. Once it was dehydrated and warm enough to be moved, the grysbokkie was moved to a nearby animal clinic for further treatment. Emergency workers named the deer Bambi. It took a lot of effort and nonstop care to get the deer to a point where it could eat and drink on its own. The healing process is sure to take a long time, but the deer’s life was saved thanks to a heroic effort by a team of emergency services personnel who thankfully take what they do very seriously.
