Most Unexpected Animal Attacks!

From angry birds and koalas … to swarms of locusts and scary-hungry hippos … here are 12 of the most unexpected animal attacks!

#12 Audience Participation
In 2016, a Swedish couple was snorkeling in Hawaii when they saw a moray eel in mortal combat with an octopus. When they stopped to film the unusual sight, the octopus managed to wrestle away from the eel and free itself. But as the cephalopod made its getaway, the eel turned its attention to the couple. That must have been a horror-movie moment when the animal suddenly emerged from a cloud of ink and zeroed in on the two snorkelers. Fortunately, they managed to evade the eel. And unlike the octopus who lost an arm, the humans managed to keep all of their limbs!

#11 When Eagles Dare
Weighing nearly 13 pounds (6 kg) with a wingspan that can exceed 9 feet (2.8 m), the Wedge-tailed Eagle is the biggest bird of prey in Oz. They’re aggressive apex predators that will join forces to hunt down larger prey like red kangaroos and sheep. They’re also known to go after paragliders, hang gliders, and unmanned drones. They are the only birds known to display such behavior, although experts say they’re defending their territory, not actively hunting prey. In 2016 a wedge-tailed eagle made international headlines when it attacked a 7-year-old boy at a desert park in Alice Springs. Onlookers said it looked like the angry bird was trying to fly off with the kid, who survived his wounds The incident was compared to the stories of these birds having flown off with human babies in the past. We couldn’t find where any such accounts had been verified. Tell us what you think in the comments below.

#10 Death by Rooster
This attack happened when a 50-year-old man in southern India was taking his fighting bird to a contest. But it turned out that the rooster wanted to fight his trainer instead. While en route to the competition, the bird broke free of its constraints. Police said that the father of three was struck in the neck by a blade attached to the rooster’s claws. After being transported to the hospital, he later died there from a stroke. Authorities confirm that blood-sport contests involving animals have been illegal in the country since 1960. And bird fighting in particular was banned by the Indian government in 2014. But the fowl activity has been practiced there since ancient times. And it remains so popular and lucrative that the welfare of animals is rarely, if ever, considered.

#9 Koalas On The Rampage
While it doesn’t happen often, they have been known to attack humans and other mammals like dogs. Beneath that cuddly exterior, these marsupials have a malevolent streak, and they can pose a legitimate danger to humans. We found a story concerning a lady in South Australia who was attacked while walking her dogs. The Koala was triggered when her pets ventured too close to a tree in which it was relaxing. Upset by the dogs, the marsupial attacked, and the lady got caught in the middle. The Koala sank its fangs into her leg and delivered a nasty bite requiring 12 stitches! Luckily she only suffered a swollen foot and no infection. While they’re normally retiring, it’s worth remembering that Koalas have sharp teeth and claws that can inflict significant damage. And they can move surprisingly fast given their shape and size. Estimates of their running speed ranges up to 20 mph (32 km/h). If that’s the case, they could probably chase you down if you really got them agitated.
