For any copyright, please send me a message.  Police in Russia are investigating a cruel couple who adopted a ‘lovable’ dog from an animal shelter – then bludgeoned it to death before cooking and eating it.  The horrific fate of ‘friendly and affectionate’ mongrel Nika came to light when shelter staff visited the new ‘respectable’ owners to check on the dog on Sakhalin island.  Volunteer Ekaterina Valyus said: “When I arrived I smelled fried meat.”  She said she then saw hair and remains of the dog in the porch.  “The rest was on their stove,” she said.  A woman named Galina had taken Nika as a pet, vowing to give it a new home.  She initially denied to shelter staff that the dog had been butchered.  But she later reportedly confessed to police that she had killed the dog, which had been rescued from the streets.  Nika had been bludgeoned to death with an iron rod, it is reported.  Dog shelter director Irina Savitskaya said Galina had ‘no shame’ and is now demanding a prison sentence over the shocking incident.  When she and her unnamed husband came to the shelter Nika had run up to them and they seemed to fall in love with the dog.  Ms Savitskaya said: “She gave me her passport details, made a contract, took the dog, and ate her new pet that very evening.  “She has admitted that she had butchered the dog and ate it.  “She just says ‘no-one will put me in jail over a dog’.”  It comes after a sick animal owner left two cats to starve to death in his rubbish-filled flat.  Ross Elliot, 36, left an “extremely dirty, stagnant mop bucket” as the only source of water for two cats in a property in Glasgow.  One cat corpse was found in a faeces-filled litter tray while the other was found lying next to an empty food bowl.  The cats “likely died a slow and unpleasant death due to a mixture of dehydration and starvation”, the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) found.  SPCA investigators monitoring the flat had put food through the letter box in an attempt to feed to cats as they waited to gain entry, Daily Record reports.  They also had no access to any food. The charity say the emaciated cats weighed just 1.4kgs and were infested with fleas and maggots.  Elliot, formerly from Barrowfield in Glasgow, was given a 10-year ban from owning animals after deserting animals Cheeky and Chilli.
