Elsa – the lioness rescued from the circus

Elsa - the lioness rescued from the circus
Spread The Viralist

In 2014, Born Free worked with Italian animal welfare organisation Lega Anti Vivisezione (LAV) to remove Elsa, along with several other animals including camels and horses, from a ramshackle circus in Sardinia after the circus owners faced an investigation for animal cruelty and were taken to court.

Born Free’s initial plan had been to relocate Elsa to our big cat sanctuary at Shamwari Private Game Reserve in South Africa, but after several visits and discussions with the staff at the sanctuary in Italy, it became apparent that Elsa was happy and thriving where she was. It was therefore in her best interest to remain at the sanctuary.

Elsa has had the worst possible start to life, but you can help can give her a life she deserves. Your generous gift will help fund Elsa’s lifetime care in Italy, including food, veterinary care, staff costs and enclosure upkeep.

  1. So happy for Elsa and her pal, I hope they have a long happy life together, snoozing in the beautiful Italian sun!! When will the human race ever learn that we have no right to imprison wild animals for so-called entertainment, be it the circus or canned hunting etc. So thankful there are wonderful sanctuaries for the rescued ones.

  2. When is Italy & those other european countries going to BAN these dreadful animal circuses!!!!even france ,Germany & spain have them ! .It means that charities like Born Free & otheres have to pick up the pieces & save these poor animals!Thank you BF for being there .from BornFree Silver menber!

  3. I'm glad Elsa is happy in Italy. Italy has wonderful weather for a lion. It's great that she has a companion to live with. Lions are gregarious, affectionate creatures and need others of their own kind. It sounds like Elsa is now a happy lioness!???

  4. Thank you so much for your action. Lions (and other species) should be banned from Circus or any public entertainments. Miserable life in cages is just unbearable. This Elsa is a beautiful mature lioness in good condition. ?
