Kangaroos, wombats, wallabies and other animals have been taken to the Sydney Wildlife rescue organisation to receive care amid bushfires raging throughout Australia.

Footage filmed on Wednesday shows the animals, some of them injured, being fed by volunteers.

“There’s a lot of little displaced and disorientated animals fleeing from the fires who’ve now lost their homes and that kind of thing,” said Joan Reid, one of the volunteers.

“We don’t discriminate. We care for anything even if it’s a venomous snake or a bat, or birds or anything like that. It’s not about always just about the cute and furry ones.”

The rescue organisation does not only take local animals under their care, but also dispatches their mobile veterinary clinic for transfers from other areas.

“We just got so many far affected animals coming in and so few carers for them, that we bring some up here to our sister organisation Sydney Wildlife who are very kind and are going to take a few of them in,” explained another volunteer hailing from the South Coast.

At least 145 fires continue burning in New South Wales and Victoria States, according to reports. At least 27 people and around half a billion animals have reportedly died since a record-breaking heatwave first triggered bushfires in September.

  1. God bless all the volunteers taking care of all the little bubs. This is going to be a long term commitment, I think. I'm grateful so many are pitching in to help. The koalas, the roos, the wallabies, the wombats, the sugar gliders….I’m really scared they're all endangered now. It would be a horrible tragedy if any of them were to become extinct, especially the koalas. I've loved koalas since I was a small child. I have a couple as stuffed toys. One is named after the drummer of INXS, my all-time favourite Australian band. The other is named after the lead singer of Icehouse, my other all-time favourite Australian band. (Yes, this American has heard of Icehouse and has been listening to them for over 35 years! Iva is still gorgeous!) I'm so glad you finally got rain, too. I will continue praying for Australia, and most especially for all the sweet animal babies. Stay strong, Australia!

  2. I've already donated all the money I can spare right now, but I'd like to make some pouches for these poor little critters if you still need them. Do you? And where can I send them? I've been watching vids where the ladies knit little nests, which is great bc my sister knits. I have some old microfleece blankets and sherpa jackets I can use. Will these work? They look like mom's pouch, but they don't look like the fabric the other volunteers are sending. Maybe their fabric lasts longer? Should I use old bed sheets and cotton clothing, instead?
