Family Animal Medicine appreciates the support and interest in Phoenix’s story. We are fortunate to be involved in his healing and recovery. Many of you have questions, to some of which we don’t yet have answers. Others have had some concerns and criticisms about the situation. What Phoenix and those taking care of him need most right now is love and support. We encourage a positive dialogue in your comments; and ask that those following refrain from negativity. With that, we wanted to provide you an update about Phoenix and his well-being.
Lots of tragedies befall stray animals. We are investigating all possible causes of Phoenix’s condition and running lab work to identify causes of his skin disease. He is being bathed frequently and is on medications to improve his skin health and provide comfort. We are not convinced there have been malicious acts, but we continue to investigate medically. We were provided evidence from a previous good Samaritan who has photos of a progression of Phoenix’s facial deterioration. It is possible there may be a medical disease causing his disfiguration. It is important that we do not automatically assume malicious acts. Animals without homes and proper care, without shelter, food and water face so many obstacles; especially if they have an underlying medical issue.
Phoenix is warm and comfortable; his belly is full, and he is being well cared for. Be assured he is safe and happy.

  5. He reminds me of one of my puppers. I found her in a garbage pile one day on my paper route (this was a few years ago!). I wrapped her in newspaper and brought her home. My mom looked out the window and cried “Oh, my God, what IS that?!!”

    Mercy had mange so badly that she had scabs instead of hair—I didn’t even know what color she was. When her hair eventually grew in, she was a beautiful girl. I WISH THE SAME FOR PHOENIX ❤️ He may never look like other dogs, but he will have a beautiful life from now on.

  6. You have published another video of this wonderful doggy several weeks ago and I said that I like him very much !! Can it be possible that he looks better now ??!! His personality is absolutely lovely – he is playful and kind . I hope he'll get into a very nice furever home soon – he could work with children and adults in needs also – he is a dog who can sense the feelings of people . ? In my eyes his appealing isn't scary or alarming – and here we can see in his foster home the children love him – they are not scared of him !! Especially when he is dressed he looks very funny – and the way he acts make every one smile and happy ? !! Phoenix is a star !! ?

  17. You should add inner leaf aloe Vera to his food once a day. Seriously good for the skin. This video made me cry, and believe me I very rarely cry. Thanks for all you guys do.

  19. I am glad he is in safe hands now. My heart is aching for him. I will keep him and his caretakers in my prayers. God bless all the people out here doing good and helping others in need weather they walking on 2 legs or 4.

  21. While I agree with your premise that one shouldn’t jump to a conclusion of malicious intent, Phoenix’s facial scarring is clearly the result of some form of thermal injury. Perhaps he was not burned intentionally, but he was most assuredly burned. It’s simply amazing that he survived. Infection, airway compromise; any number of things could have killed him; I’ve seen humans succumb to less body surface area-extensive burns. Phoenix- rising from the ashes- is a most appropriate name for this fighter! Here’s to wishing him all the best and a happy, comfortable life going forward.

  24. Oh no, what kind of person would do this? Well, it would be the same type of evil person/people who beat, raped and mutilated, my people. This individual has no respect for life whether it be human or animal.
    I simply just do not care for people who hurt others and animals.

  26. It hurts me so much that people(if i can call em like that) do such awefull things to living creatures,do such people have feelings? I am so sorry and i feel guilty that iam part of such emotionless world in wich the weakest members get treated so bad.

  28. I think someone read the story of 'Smile Dog' and tried to make it a reality =/ thankfully it didnt break this dogs spirit. he remains such a happy puppy!

    i do pray he is found and the book of the laww of creulty to animals throw at him and locked up with out parole
    this dog did not deserve this brutal treatment from someone he trusted
    ty everyone who rescued and made better this beautiful boy

  37. if a person did this………………I feel lots of rage………….but watching him trust is impossible for me not to cry a little he is truly all heart……anyone who cares for him now will cherish what they learn from him……I already feel it……so glad he is happy and healthy now………thanks so much….if he is yours you have to be so proud of him…I am

  38. Who ever did this needs to pay the price. Anyone that can hurt a dog is a psycho path… As you can see the dog still loves humans.. Dogs love hard.. I truly hope who did this has a shity life… Karma works in mysterious ways… Much love to this dog!!!! Mean people truly suck!!

  42. So glad he found people that saved him, but it is just to cruel what happened to him. Amazing how kind he still is, and then some people say the dogs are agressive. This story proves once again that there is only one dangarous creature on this earth and they call themselves humans….Thank you for saving him and I pray from now on, he will know nothing but hapiness !
