GHOST CAUGHT ON CAMERA – Church Cove, Cornwall

Spread The Viralist

We received a very interesting email with a ghost or shadow figure caught on camera. The owner of the photo, Warren Smith, provided all of the details surrounding the photo. We have followed up the story – what do you think?

Warren captured this image whilst taking photos in the churchyard of Gunwalloe Church, Church Cove, Cornwall. The image shows his brother, his father, and an unknown tall dark figure on the far right hand side of the picture. This image was captured using a Samsung D900 camera phone on a family holiday to Cornwall.

This image has been provided by Warren to us, in order to help to tell his story. This image belongs to Warren, and cannot be republished or reproduced without his consent. If you wish to make contact with him in order to use this photo, please email ourselves at cornishwalkingtrails@gmail.com and we will forward your email to him.

  1. Thank you so much you two for your visit to church cove Gunwalloe.. I've spent many pleasant times both in that church alone and with others.. I'm very receptive to spirit, having seen them through stages of life.. I can honestly say with this particular church I have never felt anything of a ghostly nature just pure peace and bliss.. I've spent lots of time in the churchyard both in daylight and dusk.. And felt the same.. Safe if anything.. I looked up the history long ago.. And read that in the smuggling days the detached Tower was used to lure cargo or merchant galleons to their doom and into the neighbouring rocks to be plundered upon by the locals.. Lots of seamen in that time period were murdered in the process.. The church foundations are very old and pre date A. D.. Something like 350 A. D.. Later the church was built up around the previous foundations.. And is as it stands today… My son and I love this church and spent time in it this Easter gone.. Most beautiful place on earth.. As far as I'm concerned anyway.. The stillness and the peace cannot be found elsewhere, and neither can the backdrop of the Atlantic ocean… However there was a church not that far away with a very strange foreboding atmosphere and I don't know if its been pulled down as it was a ramshackle of a mess when I visited it long ago.. And vowed never to go there again! I love all old historic buildings, but particularly churches and cathedrals and castles.. And ghosts yeah I'm into that and always have been… Thanks for sharing.. Hope you find some haunts.. Adrienne ?

  2. Hello,
Just watched your video and the photo looks like it could be a coast guard wearing a Sou'wester, I've seen a similar person when I stayed a the coast guard cottage in mullion.

  3. We were there yesterday (24 May 2019) and didn't spot that chap. We did see the Boka Vanguard out to sea looking really weird and developed all sorts of ideas as to what it was until we got home. I looked on the Marine Traffic Radar web site and found its name. I used that to search You Tube for it and found many videos, including one about someone who had sailed around it as it was at anchor in Mounts Bay.
This is relevant because Occam's Razor suggests that all rational explanations have to be discounted before anything fantastic is considered.
The logical explanation is that someone dressed as seen on the picture was there, but none of you noticed him when taking the photograph. I suspect that there are people who dress like this and walk around around Cornwall trying to get this reaction.
    Search Google for Inattentional blindness.
Sorry to rain on your parade.

  4. Interesting video. It's widely known that spirits contact us via electronic equipment, cameras, music players and lights for example. Fabulous story – good to see a viewer involved. All the best. Mark

  5. About the time you were posting this up, I was down at that spot having another look at the old church and cove before a beautiful sunny weekend away down in Cornwall! Have been there so many times before, (and have been known to have the odd paranormal experience over the years)…but never here! Came home today and lo and behold tuned into your channel to see that there's Mr.Ghost standing exactly where I had been on Friday! He was obviously admiring the view as I was that day! It's my favourite church anywhere! x

  6. This was very exciting 🙂 And it must have been quite eerie feeling inside of that church – especially when you were almost locked inside 🙂 Really interesting to watch. Torunn 🙂

  7. Interesting video. My husband is really into folklore and legends and would LOVE to see more ghost and folklore walks in lovely Cornwall. We live in Norfolk and are off to the coast on Wednesday in search of our own coastal ghost where a ghost-torso of a pirate has been spotted! Ooooerrrr! 😀

  8. Great video guys!…..interesting stuff. Lovely church despite the spooky goings- on! I love looking at old gravesites, and gravestones…. some of the inscriptions can be quite revealing of a persons' time in history! ??

  9. Looks a lovely church in a beautiful location, interesting photo,. I love anything to do with reputedly haunted places, especially with history behind them, enjoyed watching, all the best ?

  10. So interesting Sarah and Andrew,I need to show this one to my daughter ,as I told you she is very into the paranormal. To me , the figure looks as if he is clothed in late 1800’s religious cloak and hat ,although I am by no means an expert in period dress!! How fascinating,I hope you obtain some more information on possibilities of who it might have been !Lori

  11. If you want to go to a really creepy place then go to the Cober Valley Viaduct near Helston. It has a really creepy feel, as if you're being followed. I use to get that feeling there but not so much anymore. I put a video on ages ago of walking along the railway line and someone commented about their experience there. They also had the feeling of being followed and watched and also heard the sound of someone coughing right behind them, even though there was no one there. It's also been reported that a black figure has been seen on the viaduct. Further down the valley is a woods which is also said to be haunted.

  12. WOW! That is a really interesting picture. Investigating things like this is always interesting. Going to share this with some friends of mine that do paranormal investigations. Well done. I enjoyed this!
