Victorian "Black Saturday" Bushfires – Rescued animals

Victorian "Black Saturday" Bushfires - Rescued animals
Spread The Viralist

I have been part of a team of people helping to rescue injured and homeless animals from the fire areas following the disasterous fires of “Black Saturday”, 7th February 2009. Being a CFA firefighter, I am able to provide access to areas that are blocked to all but police and fire vehicles.

My lovely girlfriend, Rachel, who’s a nurse, has been helping every step of the way, taking calls, reading maps and moving the animals with me.

A team of vets and vet nurses helped us to provide care for the injured, and many people have donated feed, supplies and homes for the animals while they recover, or for their lives, should their owners be unable to claim them.

Unfortunately, many that we’ve found were too badly injured to be saved, and the best thing for them was to put them to sleep. It’s very sad and distressing, but at least they will suffer no more pain.

It makes me happy when I see how the animals react when you arrive to rescue them. As soon as they see people coming for them, even if they are in pain, they will nudge you and lick you.

They are all so frightened, dehydrated, and some have horrific injuries, but it is very rewarding to know they are being helped.

No animals are forgotten, no matter how small. We have recued dozens of chickens, dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas, wildlife and anything else that needs our help.

A big thanks to everyone involved in helping get the animals to safety!!!!!!!!!

  1. Had our Staffy with me as I was trying to extinguish small fires around my home. She was so terrified that she followed me absolutely everywhere. I forgot she was not protected like I was and as I walked over burning ground, she burnt her pads but still refused to leave my side. I ran to clean ground so she would follow. The vet treated her and all animals brought to the makeshift clinic near the CFA shed for free. V8 is fine now. Saw so many burnt animals during those days. Please never again.

  2. I saw last night RSPCA Animal Rescue down there at the fires and it was too sad to watch. I cried when I saw that cat! Not many of the animals have survived and the ones that made the fires are now dying from complications. It's so sad!

  3. I'm so glad you posted this, we've been sitting here in NSW worried sick about you guys! These photos are sad but yet helpful for us to get an insite! Thank you so much for posting this.
