Spread The Viralist

When a jaguar pounces, sometimes one bite is all it takes to get a meal. National Geographic has exclusive video of a jaguar taking down a caiman in Brazil’s Pantanal wetlands, photos of which went viral earlier this month. Luke Dollar, a conservation scientist who helps manage National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative, explains the hunt and explosive moment of predation.

  1. Given the jaguar's raw power and ferocity I'd hate to see a typical 6-member wolf pack go up against even 1 solitary jaguar. The jaguar's bite get be as powerful as 800 psi, compared to a wolf's that rarely exceeds 400 psi. Add to that, the jaguar's sharp, durable claws, it's agility, and its capacity to drag a cow over 1 mile, and how rapidly it can kill a tough-skinned caiman, and this is one formidable predator that a wolf pack would do well to avoid, no matter how badly the pack wants to feast on the same prey that the jaguar has claimed.

  2. Whenever a friend of mine says that canines are better hunters than felines I direct them to this video. A canine breed could never take out a Caiman on their own.
