  1. Hate to be late to the comment party, but surprisingly it was said that his helmet was dragging on the ground when the roll bar behind him dug into the ground, and that if he was any taller, he would’ve most definitely been decapitated. The most surprising thing is that if it wasn’t for the driver change this crash could’ve resulted in James May’s death… (info taken from the Top Gear Wiki)

  2. I'm sorry but this news report is incorrect in the fact that it says that they wanted to break the english land speed record. There wasnt even a speedo fitted onto the car that day to prevent the driver's (hammond) natural instinct from pushing a few mph faster to get closer to the record.

  3. bbc: "It is unclear at the moment how much experience richard hammond had in these types of cars."
Well considering there are only two known jet cars in existence, probably not alot.

  4. Of course Top Gear tried to do the land speed record, that's the sort of thing they do.

I doubt even putting a top racing driver would have changed what happened, you can't really stop that thing going out of control at that speed with only three wheels on your wagon
