Charleston Animal Society sent a team to Myrtle Beach on September 11, 2018 to evacuate 42 dogs out of harm’s way — and now other rescue efforts for shelters in the path of Hurricane Florence are being planned.

“The eye of the storm is bearing down on the Grand Strand and we have the capacity to go help,” said Charleston Animal Society Senior Director of Anti-Cruelty and Outreach Aldwin Roman. “We were able to take 42 dogs to Greenville Animal Care.”

From Greenville, the Humane Society of the United States will then take the dogs to other partner shelters for adoptions.

More assistance is being planned for animals in other parts of South Carolina that need help. “We are now in the process of assessing the storm’s path and then prioritizing the needs of those who may need help with animal evacuations,” said Charleston Animal Society CEO Joe Elmore.

During last year’s hurricane season, Charleston Animal Society had an unprecedented disaster preparedness response by rescuing and evacuating 750 animals from 7 states, Puerto Rico and The Virgin Islands. “Other animal organizations have been there for us in the past, and we will be there for them,” Elmore said.
