The forest is a popular place for suicides, reportedly the most popular in Japan and second in the world after San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Statistics vary, but what is documented is that during the period leading up to 1988, about 100 suicides occurred there every year

In 2002, 78 bodies were found in the forest, exceeding the previous record of 74 in 1998. In 2003, the rate climbed to 100, and in recent years, the local government has stopped publicizing the numbers in an attempt to downplay Aokigahara’s association with suicide. In 2004, 108 people killed themselves in the forest. In 2010, 247 people attempted suicide in the forest, 54 of whom completed the act.Suicides are said to increase during March, the end of the fiscal year in Japan. As of 2011, the most popular means of suicide in the forest were hanging and drug overdoses.

The high rate of suicide has led officials to place signs in the forest, in Japanese and English, urging suicidal visitors to seek help and not kill themselves. The annual body search, consisting of a small army of police, volunteers, and attendant journalists, began in 1970.

The site’s popularity has been attributed to the 1960 novel lit., “Tower of Waves” (波の塔?) by Seichō Matsumoto. However, the history of suicide in Aokigahara predates the novel’s publication, and the place has long been associated with death: ubasute may have been practiced there into the nineteenth century, and the forest is reputedly haunted by the Yūrei (angry spirits) of those left to die.

  1. You're laughing and joking and stuff. You know, the Villagers who live close by the mountain. Unknown to murder people in the forest. Some people were found murdered in there. So all of them were not suicide.

  2. believe me there's no spooky stuff inside that forest it feels creepy cuz some people commit suicide there thats all no alien shits or noroi stuffs happens there

  3. I think the ground & the iron in the ground is what might be killing these people. Remember this place sits on the edge of a Mountain polluted with all kinds of junk. Also Japanese are not Christians & don't believe in Christ, they believe in Budda & their way of thinking is totally different than others. The Compass doesn't work becuase of the Iron in the ground. I bet you they are probably charging a fee to get in there & it's becoming one heck of a Torist site.

  4. security now stops you if you go off of the path. you now have to pay a fee to get in the forest. unless you sneak in through one of the paths on the main highway.

  5. Ghosts of dead people are demons on disguise to lure people away from God. "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" HEBREWS 9:27 KJV Time is short before the rapture. Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven. Know and believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins and sins of the world shed his blood and rose from the grave on the third day and went back to heaven to prepare a place. Turn away from your sins and admit your a sinner, confess and repent of your sins and ask forgiveness and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Personal Saviour. God will forgive your sins and after you get saved keep on asking forgiveness when you sinned.

  6. You guys really have some of your facts mixed up about Aokigahara Jyukai and Japanese paranormal terminology in general. I've been going there for years as well as researching other Japanese paranormal sites. If you have some questions feel free to get in touch with me and I'll answer any questions you may have.

  7. Eph.6

[12] For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Rev.18 – The book of Revelations reveal that there are places that are habitations of devils…it is not wise to go to such locations

[2] And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

  8. i went there you have to be care full cuz i went like in the deep part just to look and i felt so bad for he ppl who just let go with with life

  9. First off the book was called Kuroi Jukai, Black Sea of Trees.  The name of the forest is Aokigahara ( pronounced Ah oh key ga ha ra).  Second, some parts of the forest are dark, but others are well lit, from what you can see of the videos and pictures.  Get it right.

  10. Ok, "Yurei" is just a regular ghost, a human spirit that decided to roam around. Some can be dangerous as in if they died with anger & hatred where they want other's to feel their pain.
The demons that are said to run around the forest are Oni's, which I guess is the closest thing to a Western idea of a demon but imo they resemble Ogre's more. There also stories of a "magical/mysterious" lake where koi' grow to 7-9ft long, but the stories of family members deserting their elder's in that forest are true, but this happened like a long time ago, like way before WW1. One last thing, people commit suicide in almost every forest in Japan small or large. I've known of about 3 people who committed suicide in the forest near my Grandmother's house in Yokohama, honestly people commit suicide all over Japan which is what happens when you have a really high rate of suicides so you can walk around mundane places & its almost guaranteed that someone has committed suicide there.

  11. The one's that did live to tell that they jumped off the bridge they said that when there hands left the railing that they said to them self I want to live.its was 30 that sirvied and they are all doing fine they broke some bones but are ok..
