So I don't think he was the dad to those puppies. I only think this because they are not like him. They are all black with little white. Since she had little black and he as well. He may or smelled her and was trying to mate with her so she's have his puppies. Typically females can be/get pregnant while with puppies.

The most obvious trust-building maneuvers with such hesitant animals seems to often be missed. I'd have taken the first puppy and went to the mom, holding the puppy safely, petting it. That way the mom would know you're not a threat, not even really a 'snatcher'.

It didn't finish properly, no reunion. That means the OTHER dog was the Momma. They got the wrong dog.
