MMA fighter Joao Carvalho, 28, died following a rough third-round technical knockout loss in Dublin, Ireland. Carvalho underwent brain surgery immediately and stayed in critical condition for 48 hours.

2. Mike Mittelmeier (21-09-1992 – 27-04-2012)

Mittelmeier died following an unsanctioned bout in Bolivia. After taking down his opponent and applying a leg lock, his opponent illegally kicked him in the head with the heel of his foot, knocking him out. The fight was stopped and Mittelmeier was pronounced the winner by disqualification, a few seconds later he collapsed (later being diagnosed with a cerebral hemorrhage that left him comatose). It is alleged that the promoters did not have a doctor or ambulance standing by and it took a long time before he was transferred to a hospital

5. Michael Kirkham (27-07-1980 – 26-06-2010)

Michael lost a amateur fight in via a technical knockout, a bout that should have resulted in a disqualification of his opponent. Kirkham was given an automatic 30-day medical suspension for the TKO loss, but it doesn’t appear that he followed up with a doctor.

Two days after the suspension ended, Kirkham suffered a brain hemorrhage in his pro debut at the University of South Carolina Aiken Convocation Center on June 26. He died two days later at the age of 30.

“The guy beat the heck out of the back of Michael’s head to the point where it was beet red,” Kirkham told FanHouse. “The other fighter was warned two or three times by the referee.”

  1. Yeah referees should have better training and know what to look for. And fighters should have more respect for each other. I just seen Uriah fight in ufc july 2019 and the ref was pulling him off and he keep punching. He should know better being a vet like that

  2. I hope the people who killed them and didn't care go to hell band suffer forever. After 10 billion years time won't have even started!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. There’s risk yes, but some of the refs (who are there to keep stuff like this from happening because a fighter will seldom give up) should have stopped these fights way sooner!
