There are snacks available everywhere you look in Thailand, and in Bangkok snacking on snacks is one of the favorite activities of nearly all residents. Snacks in Thailand are convenient to eat, often displayed on the side of the road and packaged so they are easy to grab on the go.

In todays video, I went to one of my favorite markets in Bangkok known as Sriyan Market and found a lady cooking up an ancient Thai snack know as Khao Kriap Wow (ข้าวเกรียบว่าว). It can also be referred to as Khao Khuap or Khao Phong. This ancient Thai snack has been around for quite some time!

The Thai street snack all begins with rice flour that combined with coconut milk, palm sugar, eggs, and oil. The ingredients are beat up into a pancake like batter and then made into thin pancakes. Now I don’t have a clue how the preparation goes from there, is that the Khao Kriap Wow (ข้าวเกรียบว่าว) is then dried into thin sheets. After that process, the snack is then fired over hot coals as it cooks quickly while being tossed back and forth using bamboo tongs.

The result is a cracker like edible that looks like a shrimp chip and tastes a lot like a Western meringue. The rice can be detected as can the egg white flavor, but I could hardly taste the coconut cream in it. Anyway, it’s kind of dry and not actually my favorite Thai snack in the world, but nevertheless, it has some history and is pretty interesting to see being prepared.

  1. Mark Wiens, is there a chance you'd post the recipe in mixing the flower of up to the point of getting that thin flap/circular disc/piec to be recook over the fire? Thanks!

  2. The last time I saw Khao Kriap Wow being made like this was 20 years ago. This thing is sweet and melts in your mouth right away.

  3. I love that you seem to have genuine respect for the culture and country you're in. A lot of younger tourist tend to be a little immature and judgmental. Thanks for what you do!

  4. Hey, thanks a lot for watching! The main problem is that I travel quite frequently and I'm in and out of Bangkok a lot. Perhaps in the future!

  5. I hope so, but not sure yet. I'm going to start in Kolkata and then go north, but I would love to go south too if I have enough time. That would be great. I've had southern Indian food in Kuala Lumpur many times and I absolutely love it!

  6. wow! I cann't wait to see some yummy Indian food…I miss it so badly…are you planning to visit South India? If so, Please try chettinad cuisine..Amazing food… I'll send you the list of food that you should never miss 🙂

  7. Great, thank you for watching. I'm actually going to visit India starting in a few weeks, so hopefully will get to make some India food videos too!

  8. Hey, I'm actually 1/2 Chinese. But yes, I really do love Thailand and the food, but I also love Chinese food too! Where are you from?

  9. I was born and bred in India.I am living in US now.I am looking forward to watching more new videos….:) I love to cook and I am learning a lot here!

  10. Thank you, I really appreciate you watching my videos. I hope you can do some traveling in the future! Where are you from?

  11. awesome videos! I watch it everyday and I am getting addicted ! 🙂 I wish I could travel like you and taste all the yummy food…

  12. Sema Joelo! Ying's dad loves that snack which is why we buy it at nearly every opportunity we see – as it's not too common. I've only seen people eat it plain, it's almost like a rice chip.

Thanks for the suggestions too man, I'm going to be ditching music I think, apart from a little drum music, and just include all the background noise!

  13. Man that looks awesome, and I think that Ive never seen that either! Looks like a nice sweet snack, what would you eat that with? Any shrimp paste? Make some Kottu with it??? hahah

DUDE the comment on the bottom, the Canadians who watch your vids on lunch break!!!!! That is awesome!!! You are killin it man 🙂 … i will have to agree with them on this one tho, i am laughing at the music but it doesnt fit with this video.

  14. Hey, alright cool, in the future I'll remember this, and I'm grateful for you input. I think I'm going to try making videos with no music, just the background sound.

  15. Hi Mark. Didn't know about this snack. Will definitely keep an eye out for it. Looks pretty tasty. Anyway, the music really put me off this episode. I definitely prefer no music like your other videos. Maybe a short tune for intro/outro is ok but the cheesy trance all over doesn't work 🙁

  16. Your videos are never boring- the only music we like is the old music you have, like in Sri Lanka, and other places- BUT at the beginning and especially the end of the videos. This is the opinion of 9 of us here in Vancouver, CANADA from one work place, we watch your videos on lunch break!!!

  17. Hey, thank you very much and I appreciate the suggestion. I'm always looking for free music I can use that's royalty free (so I don't run into any copyright issues), and it's not always the best music… but maybe I should just keep the natural background noise? Do you think that would get boring though? I'm really thankful for you sharing your thoughts so I can improve!
