STORYLINE:

An abandoned baby girl who was reportedly rescued by a stray dog foraging for food in a Kenyan forest is “doing very well”, according to medical staff at Kenyatta National Hospital on Monday.

The child, who has been named Angel by hospital staff, is in a “stable” condition after being found by the dog in Naorobi’s Ngong forest on Friday, said Nurse Omwoyo.

It’s believed the dog, who was nursing a litter of puppies, must have carried the infant across a busy road and through a barbed wire fence before placing it among its puppies, where the child was later discovered, said residents.

The child was fortunately unharmed when the dog carried her in the plastic bag in which she was abandoned and placed her with the puppies, said Aggrey Mwalimu, owner of the compound where the dog has taken residence.

The infant was reportedly also wrapped in an old tattered shirt.

Resident Linet Gogany said she discovered the child amongst the dog’s puppy litter after local boys said they heard a baby crying.

The child was then taken to the Karen Police Station, and then to the Kenyatta National hospital in the capital, Nairobi.

The baby had been abandoned for some two days before the dog discovered her.

Doctors found maggots in her umbilical cord, a spokeswoman of the Kenyatta National Hospital said on Monday.
